Last week, Business Insider reported that potato prices in South Africa have increased sharply. Well, that certainly seems to be the case. We had a look at the price of potatoes at three of South Africa’s major retailers and here’s what we found.
At one retailer, the price of a 7kg bag of potatoes increased from about R60 in August to R80 by the end of October.
And overall, potato prices have increased by 15% since the start of August! Yikes. Things are not looking good for those of us who enjoy a good potato salad with a summer braai.
Apparently the potato harvest has been smaller this year due to unusually cold weather in Limpopo province, a major potato growing region in South Africa. Let’s hope that the conditions get better soon.
